Field research in Central America


Asia - A flair of strangeness

 

 

LIVING ABROAD
was an important part of my life, maybe to feel cosy at home later on.

My intention was not to travel around, but to work abroad to get in touch with the people on a daily basis.

After a practical training in Basle/Switzerland (1990/91) I went to

Central America
Conducting a field study for my Master thesis (six months 1993/94). I stayed in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Honduras.'

 

 

South-East-Asia
After finishing my MA I moved to Asia and worked for six years (1995-2001) as a Marketing Manager in an international travel agency. The headquarter was in Bangkok/ Thailand and traveld frequently to our partners in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Southern China, Nepal, India and Indonesia (negotiation, contract activities, product management). Beside this job I implemented my field research for my PhD thesis.

Nepal: less thoughts on 5.000m

 

Nepal
Before I left Asia I took the chance to work in Nepal as a tourism consultant for four months which was overshadowed by guerrilla activities of the Maoist movement.
In this picture Sherpa Angtshering brought me back to reality: on the way to Yalung Ri (5.630) I was proud to stay overnight at over 5.000 m (over 16.500 feet) and prepared my tent. Angtshering slept outside covered only by a blanket…

China
Now my research activities are mostly in China with frequent visits at universities mainly in Shanghai and Beijing.

SELF REFLECTION through challenges and experiencing nature.

If you want to be successful in outdoor activities, never work against nature. Be a part of it. Go with the flow and use the dynamic of nature (water, air…).

KAYAKING
was/is my favourite sport. With the age of 10 I had my first experiences. With 18 I worked as kayak teacher and rafting guide to finance my     study at the university. Still now I am fascinated by waterfall kayaking and small canyons.

NEW EXPERIENCES
Learning and getting new experience is important for me. If I have time I try to learn new things like surfing (the only professional thing I can do is holding the board). It helps to broaden the mind, respect nature and to find a synthesis between body and soul.
